Not Drowning… Waving
The Federal Minister for Industry & Science, the Hon Ian Macfarlane MP and Carnegie CEO, Dr Michael Ottaviano switched on the world’s first grid connected wave energy array power plant today, February 19th.
The world’s first grid-connected wave energy array is now pumping enough electricity to power between 1,500 to 2,000 households in Western Australia. At the moment, the Department of Defence buys all the wave power for use on Garden Island by HMAS Stirling, Australia’s largest naval base.
Minister Macfarlane referred to the Project as
“great evidence of a commercial success in renewable energy. This type of practical application will guide future development of Australia’s renewable energy sector.”
Ed: When so much of current policy appears concerned with the nature of stranded assets and poor long-term energy investments, such developments show a future for assets, infrastructure and investment opportunities.
